What should you keep in mind when choosing a college to learn Fashion Design?
There are so many Fashion Colleges out there in different forms and sizes. Whilst some maybe good in marketing and they do not necessarily provide the type of education or environment you may be looking for....
Simply because Fashion is so diverse a subject there can be niches.
A good college ideally should provide with all the basic knowledge first and then with the specialization of a particular area.
If you do look at the curriculum provided so many colleges opt out of basics such as sewing and patternmaking which are integral parts of creating a design collection for any designer!
Creative studies too ideally should include life drawing lessons as your whole life you will be drawing for real people. So this needs to precede sketching and the whole process of creating a collection should have mind mapping and development involved so you are employing both your creative and your analytical mind!
I have seen some colleges overseas recently where a student was given to copy a croquis and called it sketching, there was no knowledge of fabric, life drawing or even colour theory and her programme was 4 years long!
She had beautiful garments but none created by her and I doubt she could ever land a job in Design!
So it's imperative you learn from a course that gives you the skills! At the end of the day that is what makes you be hired and makes you job worthy!
I will catch you soon with another blog!!
